Five years of friendship (talk)

I gave a talk at Warwick Game Design last week, talking about my experiences from five years of going to events and meeting people. Also covered: how GamerGate has personally impacted those people.

Slides & more info

I have several other talks that I’ve given over the years, if that interests you. They’re mostly more positive than this one!

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build at GameCity Nottingham

image

I’ll be at GameCity all next week! Running from 25th October to 1st November, GameCity is the friendliest game festival around.

I’ll be exhibiting A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build at the Open Arcade on the following days:

  • Sunday 26th October, 12:00 - 5:00
  • Tuesday 28th October, 12:00 - 5:00
  • Friday 31st October, 12:00 - 5:00

You can also just grab me if you see me around at any point and say the secret passphrase “Hey Alan can I play A Good Snowman?”

GameCity can be found at 24-32 Carlton St, in the centre of Nottingham (NG1 1NN). It’s completely free and open to the public, so if you’re in the area you should definitely come by!

Unrelated to GameCity, next week I’ll also be releasing my latest PuzzleScript game made for my Patreon! It features mirrors, floating crates, and tricky puzzles. Patreon backers can already check out a non-finished preview of it.

Bit of a dry blog today, if you want entertainment you should look elsewhere. But I was trying to help a few people on Twitter with this earlier today, and thought it would be useful to have somewhere to point to.

“If I wanted to clone Atomix, this is where I’d start”: an Atomix levelpack

image

So with the recent Steam release of Sokobond, a few people were comparing it to Atomix, a game from 1990 about moving atoms around to make molecules.

The first thing to say about this is that it’s totally understandable! They’re both tile-based puzzle games about moving atoms around to form molecules. What could be more similar?

Well it turns out they play incredibly differently, but that’s not even the point here.

My first month on Patreon

Before I start, the first thing to say is “thank you” to everyone who has supported me. Your support means a lot to me and I’m very grateful you consider my games interesting enough to be worth contributing for.

Just over a month ago, I launched a Patreon campaign for monthly free games. This was an experiment: I’m not in dire immediate need of money to pay my bills but I do enjoy making small games and releasing them for free. Could I convince people to give me money in return for these games that I’d want to be making anyway?

Because I wasn’t sure what to expect, I decided to set a goal: if I reach $300 per game by 1st September, it will have proved itself worth continuing with. If not, I’ll shut down the campaign to avoid being stuck in that awkward situation where I’m making $3 per game and I’m embarrassed to link to it.
