Call for collaborators

Having just released A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build, what’s next? That’s the question a lot of people are asking me and there’s a few different parts:

  • I’ll be working on mobile ports of A Good Snowman and Sokobond: hopefully they’ll both be done this year.
  • I’ll continue making smaller games for my Patreon.
  • And maybe I’ll start some exciting new projects? With exciting new people?

But what projects would those be? My bigger projects so far have kinda just happened and I don’t really want to change that vibe. Knowing who’s potentially interested in collaborating with me would help me make those decisions though.

In July 2014, Harry and I sat down and chatted aimlessly about Sokobond for a while. If you enjoyed Sokobond you might be interested in this video? Honestly I have no idea who we made this for.

To celebrate the launch of A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build, Sokobond is 50% off for the next week.

It’s also newly released onto GOG, if that’s your store of choice! Read more about that over on GOG.com.

If you’ve enjoyed the wintry puzzling of making snowmen, try mastering the bonds of chemistry. What Sokobond lacks in adorableness and hugs, it more than makes up for in elegance. No chemistry knowledge required!

The pay what the temperature is launch sale for A Good Snowman is still ongoing also! The temperature today was 10°C, so the price today is $10: 20% off!

Train Braining

image

My first thought when sitting down to make a puzzle game about trains was “but Cute Train already exists!” So I stole the art from that game but made something different with it.

Train Braining was made for Train Jam 2015, over the course of 48 hours travelling between Chicago and San Francisco. It’s apparently pretty hard!

It’s the latest free game I’ve made for my Patreon campaign, after a gap of a few months while I was finishing off A Good Snowman.

Pay what the temperature is for A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build!

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is finally here!

As of right now, you can purchase the game from agoodsnowman.com for Windows, Mac and Linux.

We hope you’ll enjoy building snowmen as much as we’ve enjoyed making it for you!

But this isn’t just a game launch. We also have a little surprise we’ve been cooking up for the launch sale…

The price for the next two weeks is: pay what the temperature is

Just before having his tea every day, the monster goes out to the weather station in London to check the day’s temperature. The colder it is, the more snow you’re likely to have. The more snow you have, the more you’re going to need this guide, so the monster is going to make it cheaper. He wants the world to be filled with lots of lovely snowmen!

You can check the current price on agoodsnowman.com or follow @AGoodSnowman on Twitter for daily weather/price updates and insight into the monster’s life.

All purchases come with a Steam key, but if you buy the game on Steam then you unfortunately won’t be able to access the pay what the temperature is sale: the price there will be a boring and unchanging 20% off for the next week.

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build - coming February 25

I’m excited to announce that A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build now has a release date: February 25. It’s finally happening! It’ll be available for Windows, Mac and Linux, from Steam, the Humble Store, itch.io, and from agoodsnowman.com of course.

If you’re not already aware, the game is an adorable puzzle game about being a monster and making snowmen. We’ve been pouring our hearts into making it the loveliest thing ever and we’re looking forward to having you all be able to play!

So that’s the release date. There’s one more very special announcement to make, but it’s a surprise: you’ll have to wait until the 25th to hear about it. I think you’ll like it!

If you want to be one of the first to hear about that, you can follow @AGoodSnowman on Twitter for updates and insight into the monster’s life. Or you can enter your email address on agoodsnowman.com to join our extremely low-volume mailing list.

If you’re a youtuber/let’s-player/streamer or a member of the press and want to check out the game before it comes out, please request a review copy of the game using distribute()!

Sokobond now available on itch.io!

itch.io is the most indie-friendly game store out there, so it makes me very happy to say that you can now buy Sokobond there, for the usual price of $10.

You can also still buy the game via the Humble widget on sokobond.com and from Steam.

The game has also been updated on all stores with a few improvements. In this version:

  • Controller support on Mac

  • Controller support on Linux

  • Improve stability of Linux installer

  • Tweak level ‘Playful’ to reduce likelihood of unintended solutions

  • Stop repeated lagging on some machines

  • Various minor improvements

  • ???

I love puzzle games. But it’s not beating them that’s the exciting part: it’s understanding them.

Whether mulling over a cryptic crossword or somersaulting through Portal’s portals, there’s a moment of epiphany which, for me, pretty much transcends all other moments in gaming. But how do you design a puzzle to best provoke that eureka moment? What gives a puzzle its aesthetic, its pace and texture? Why does one puzzle feel thrilling while another feels like a flat mental grind?

I’ve asked three of my favourite puzzle game designers to demystify their dark magicks: Jonathan Blow, best known for the puzzle-platformer Braid and currently hard at work on firstperson perplexathon, The WitnessAlan “Draknek” Hazelden, creator of Sokoban-inspired sequential-logic games, including SokobondMirror Isles and the forthcoming A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build; and Jonathan Whiting, a programmer on Sportsfriends and collaborator with Hazelden on Traal, whose own games are a regular Ludum Dare highlight.

I chatted to Marsh Davies about puzzle design for Rock Paper Shotgun and I think it’s a pretty good read.

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build - coming to Steam before winter’s end

Ben, Ryan and I have been working hard on A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build, but it’s not quite done yet.

To tide people over the Christmas period, we’ve released a Christmas card containing a new gameplay trailer and the announcement that it will definitely be released by the end of winter.

This game is something that started out as “just a small game we can make in a week” last Christmas, so it’ll be good to get it out into the world in only slightly more than a year!
